My camera, my surf dream

December 8th, 2023. It was the first day I got into the water with my camera. But that’s not really why it was so special. I’ll tell you why.

Playa de Esquinzo, Fuerteventura

Over 3 years ago, I went to the Canary Islands and met up with some friends at the beach. They went surfing. But there was another guy in the water, without a surfboard. As I got closer, I realized he was holding a camera.

After the sun had set and the sky started shining in dots instead of as a whole, the guy who was swimming with the camera came over to where my friends and I were hanging out.

He started showing us photos of my friends surfing and all that would echo was “woooowww” every 10 seconds. Then, with a smile I am sure he perfected over the years, he said “You want them? They’re 50 euros a person”.

What happened next blew my mind: Everyone was ready to pay him. What a dream.

It was at that moment, I knew what a driving, invincible, inspiration felt like. And 3 years later, there I was: taking photos of my friends surfing, just like I imagined that night in Fuerteventura as I lay in my bed.

I think I forgot to imagine my friends paying me 50$ each, but as I sat to edit these photos, I was definitely really frickin happy.
